Senator Shamp Helps Provide Safety Measures
in Dental Offices
PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Dental offices in Arizona will now have to meet new requirements for administering general anesthesia and sedation, creating a safer experience for patients, after the Governor signed SB 1602.
This bill, sponsored by Senator Janae Shamp (R-29), will help improve accessibility, set guidelines, and ensure patient safety by establishing a set of protocols, which includes emergency response, when a dental office is administering anesthesia.
"It was brought to my attention at the beginning of session that there have been several deaths in recent years of patients undergoing dental procedures with the use of anesthesia," said Senator Shamp. "While infrequent, no one should die in a dental office, and no patient should ever fear that their dental office is putting their life at risk. Period. I'm confident this bill will help ensure this does not happen again."
This is an emergency measure and took effect upon the Governor's signature.
